How to choose hydraulic seals

Common hydraulic seals are self-sealing pressure type hydraulic seals, usually O-type seals, circular seals and rectangular rings, with the advantages of compact structure, convenient manufacturing, low price and so on. Therefore, they are the dynamic sealing elements and static sealing elements widely used in hydraulic control systems. They are installed in the sealing groove and generally produce 15 to 25% axial compression deformation, forming a high initial contact stress on the sealing surface, thereby preventing the leakage of non-pressure liquid.

Hydraulic seals:

When buying repair seals, most users will buy according to the size and color of the sample, which will only increase the difficulty of buying and may not be able to choose the right product. The following procedures are recommended to improve the accuracy of seals procured:

1. Seal key points

For example, the active point is the inner diameter tie rod seal or the active point is the diameter piston seal and so on.

2. Direction of movement

First of all, clear the direction of movement of the sealing position, such as reciprocating, rotating, spiraling or fixing.

3. Temperature rating

Check the operating temperature from the original machine instruction manual or evaluate the actual working environment to determine the required materials. Please refer to the following precautions for production customers for descriptions of relevant temperature levels.

4. Stress level

Check the relevant data from the original machine manual, or infer the pressure level at work by looking at the softness and structure of the original seal. A description of the relevant pressure levels can be found in the following notes for production customers.

5. Size

Most users will buy according to used old samples, but after a period of use, the seal will be greatly affected by temperature, pressure, damage and other factors. Sample selection can only be used as a guide. A better method is to measure the metal groove specifications where the seals are located, which will be more accurate.

Production customer Note:

The general cause of seal damage is almost the working requirements of seals:

Step 1 Damage

The wear of seals includes the surface smoothness, movement speed and transmission media of the matching parts, and different sealing materials are suitable for different movement speeds.

2. Hardening (aging)

One of the reasons for the leakage of seals is due to the hardening of their own material under the influence of temperature. When the hardness is too high, the seal cannot fill the gap between the fitting parts, resulting in leakage.

3. Etching

The seal becomes soft or even melts because the seal is invaded by the medium and the material selection is wrong. Pay special attention if the medium contains water or solvents.

Step 4 Squeeze out

When the seal is subjected to too much pressure, it will squeeze out the metal gap, damage the seal, and lead to leakage. This situation involves whether the hardness of the seal itself and the metal gap are too large. Extrusion damage can occur if planning, selection, processing or installation is not handled properly.
