Why should the sealing ring be trimmed?

The purpose of sealing ring trimming is to optimize the dimensional accuracy, appearance quality and performance of the sealing ring, including the following aspects:

1. Remove raw edges and flash edges

Problem: When the sealing ring is injected, extruded or moulded, it is easy to form burrs or flaring edges at the edges due to material flow or mold parting surface clearance.

Impact: Raw edges may scratch the surface of mating parts, resulting in seal failure or assembly difficulties.

Purpose: To remove excess material by trimming, ensure smooth edges and avoid interference or leakage.

2. Ensure dimensional accuracy

Problem: Rough edges or flying edges can cause the outer diameter, inner diameter or thickness of the sealing ring to be outside the tolerance range.

Impact: Dimensional deviations can result in a loose seal (leakage) or an over-tight assembly (damage to the seal ring).

Objective: After trimming, the dimensions meet the design requirements and ensure the stability of sealing performance.

3. Improve appearance quality

Problem: Raw edges and flying edges affect the appearance of the seal ring and reduce the quality of the product.

Impact: In areas with high cleanliness requirements such as medical care and food, appearance defects may be regarded as nonconformity.

Objective: After trimming, the surface is smooth and flawless to improve product aesthetics and customer acceptance.

4. Prevent stress concentration

Problem: Untrimmed rough edges may have sharp or irregular shapes, leading to stress concentration.

Impact: In long-term use, stress concentration is easy to cause sealing ring cracking or fatigue failure.

Objective: After trimming, the edge is rounded, the stress concentration is reduced and the service life is extended.

5. Meet special process requirements

Problem: Some application scenarios (such as high-pressure sealing, rotary sealing) have special requirements for the rounding and chamfering of the edge of the seal ring.

Impact: Untrimmed seals may not meet process standards, resulting in leakage or wear.

Objective: To optimize sealing performance by trimming edges to form specific shapes (e.g. chamfer, rounded corners).

6. Reduce installation resistance

Problem: The raw edge may get stuck in the gap between the mounting slot or matching parts, increasing the difficulty of installation.

Impact: Forced installation may cause deformation or damage to the sealing ring.

Objective: After trimming, the edge is smooth, the installation is smooth, and the damage is avoided.

Trimming method

Manual trimming: suitable for small batches or complex shapes, but low efficiency and poor consistency.

Mechanical trimming: such as punching, grinding, laser cutting, high efficiency, suitable for mass production.

Freezing trimming: liquid nitrogen freezing sealing ring is used to make the raw edge fall off after embrittlement, which is suitable for soft materials such as rubber.

Sealing ring trimming is a key process to ensure sealing performance, dimensional accuracy and appearance quality. By removing raw edges, flying edges and optimizing edge shape, the reliability, durability and market performance of the seal can be significantly improved Field competitiveness.
